SENIOR YEAR COLLEGE PLANNING TIMELINE
June-August:
1. Continue to research colleges and training opportunities: Use Xello or Big Future or College Scorecard. You can also visit colleges for free! Check out 'virtual college tours" as well.
2. What will your plan be? If not college, then what? Our goal is to have a plan that fits you best!
September:
1. Begin your college applications or start looking at trade/apprenticeship/military steps.
2. Ask for letters of recommendation if needed.
3. Begin writing your admissions essay if needed.
4. Meet with your Mrs. Scovill one-on-one to start discussing your plan.
October:
1. Fennville Future Plans Week! - last week of October. This is a fun senior event to help with college application completion! We will have treats, raffle prizes and advising support!
2. If your plan is geared toward trades or the workforce, create a Resume this month.
2. Finish ALL college applications by October 31st.
5. If your college requires the ‘Common App’, be sure to start early!
November-December:
1. Begin seriously searching and applying for scholarships.
2. The Common App is due November 1 for early decision for colleges such as Hope and U of M. Pay attention to those deadlines.
3. November is National Apprenticeship month. What can we do to help you develop your apprenticeship or work force training program plan?
4. FAFSA (Free Application For Federal Student Aid) opens Deecmber 1st! This is how you get free college funds and very important! All college going students need to complete this step!
January-February:
1. Submit FAFSA and check to make sure your FAFSA was successfully submitted.
2. Begin working on your Local Scholarship application.
March:
1. MUST submit FAFSA by March 1st. Final deadline!
2. Local Scholarship application due in March.
3. Submit supplemental financial aid documents to your college (if necessary).
4. Complete FAFSA verification (if necessary).
5. Submit your TIP application (if necessary).
April:
1. Receive financial aid awards from all colleges where you were accepted. Show them to Mrs. Scovill!
2. Check your mail, email, and online accounts to find financial aid information to stay on top of all steps.
3. Meet with Mrs. Scovill to review financial aid award letters.
4. Compare these letters to help determine lowest costs.
May:
1. Decision Day! Notify the college you plan to attend by May 1st.
2. Finalize all trade and apprenticeship steps and communication with employers.
3. Next steps often include: Paying deposits and signing up for housing and orientation.
4. Accept financial aid awards and complete entrance counseling if you have loans.
5. Meet with Mrs. Scovill to report college plans and financial aid awards.
6. GRADUATION!
